Beyond Our Hearts Foundation Malawi with funding from Malawi Diaspora Network – USA has on Friday distributed items to Cyclone Freddy survivors in eight villages around Neno district.
The items include, blankets, mattresses, salt, 2kgs sugar, Likuni Phala flour, rolls of plastic papers, 25 kgs of maize flour and beans.
According to Neno district Director of Planning and Development, Charles Lomoni, the diaspora community is targeting sixty households and all lactating mothers that were affected by the cyclone.
Speaking at one site, Nanzanga, Neno District commissioner Hudson Kuphanga hailed Beyond Our Hearts Foundation – Malawi and Malawi – Diaspora Network – USA for the timely support to the affected households.
“I feel greatly honoured to have these items flowing in my district, we have been hit and many houses have collapsed which need rebuilding with resilient building materials,” he said.
One of the beneficiaries, Davie Moyenda, who is blind and had his house damaged, thanked the United States based Malawians for the help, saying he was starving as all he had was swashed away.
Spokesperson for Malawi Diaspora Network – USA Tonny Chirwa, said that they are happy to support and will continue raising funds for other affected districts in the Southern region.
On his part, the Executive Director for Beyond Our Hearts Foundation Russell Msiska recommend Malawi Diaspora Network – USA for working with his his entity and has assured transparency and accountability in the whole exercise
“We must say we have been bailed out and I’m making this promise to ensure that no single item is channeled to undeserving members of the community,” said Msiska.
The team also shared the items to the family of Mr. and Mrs Chiwaya which has two physically challenged children who are in dire need of wheelchairs for easy mobility to school.
Pilirani Chiwaya, while receiving the items says ” the children are bright, the other one is in standard seven and the other in standard three but they face challenges to reach school,”.
The Director of Planning and Development, Charles Lomoni praised the family for their exemplary altitude towards their children, saying many think having physically challenged children is a curse.
The district still needs more support in terms of relief items, says District Relief and Rehabilitation officer, Brighton Mphinga.
